Professor Rashmi Mathew is a Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon at Moorfields Eye Hospital, specialising in glaucoma. She holds the position of Professor of Education at University College London (UCL), where she co-leads a Clinical Master’s programme and has developed a number of leadership training packages, including short courses and a dedicated masters module on clinical leadership.
She is actively involved in national governance and advisory roles, serving on several committees such as the British Ophthalmological Surveillance Committee and the Ophthalmology Council of the Royal Society of Medicine, where she has held a position since 2012.
A strong advocate for patient education, she has led Glaucoma Patient Information Events since 2011 and has recently launched a comprehensive digital learning package designed to support individuals living with glaucoma.
Her academic work is reflected in over 50 peer-reviewed publications. Her research interests span glaucoma care pathways, inclusive postgraduate medical education, and fostering belonging in postgraduate training environments.
Outside of her clinical and academic commitments, she enjoys running, cycling, and spending time with her two young children. She is also deeply committed to mentoring young adults from Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) backgrounds who aspire to careers in medicine.
