Medical Student Grants
The Medical
Women's Federation awards and oversees a variety of grants and prizes throughout
the year. For more details please see below:
Mature Medical Student Grants
Small grants are awarded annually to mature
(i.e. 2nd degree) female medical students. Grants are only available to students
who have not received a NHS bursary. Forms are available
from February for the academic session beginning in autumn by email or on
this site. Applications must be returned completed with the required documentation
(originals) by 31 May. Successful candidates are informed by the end of July,
and cheques are posted in October. Awards are normally between £50-£300
per person. Medical Students who move during their busy clinical years will
be given higher priority compared to first year students who may only be given
an award in exceptional circumstances.
Medical Student Prize
MWF is sponsoring a £100 prize in participating
medical schools throughout the UK. We have been liasing with medical schools
and some have been allocating the prize. Please note that MWF is not responsible
for the decisions regarding the successful applicant and enquiries should be
made to your own university awards office. If you wish to find out whether your
medical school is participating, or are an MWF member and would interested in
presenting the prize at your local medical school, please e-mail admin.mwf@btconnect.com
Elective Bursaries
Small grants
of £50-£200 are awarded to female medical students to assist them
with elective costs. The deadline is mid-January for electives taking place
that year – we cannot fund retrospectively. Please note that MWF members
are given priority and there will be some geographical spread to the awards.
Application forms will be available on this website and from central office
from October.
NB The application process for those based/studying in Scotland is
slightly different. If you are based in Scotland please click here for more
information >>.
Katherine Branson Essay Competition
This competition is held annually and will open
in January 2011. Medical Students are invited to submit short essays on two
prescribed topics and will be given the chance to present them at our Spring
Meeting as well as receiving a cash prize.
Dame Rosemary Rue Travel Fund
MWF can help students with travel costs to attend
our meetings. If you wish to take advantage of this please contact central office
before making travel arrangements to confirm your costs can
be re-imbursed using the form you can download here>>.
Please use the cheapest means of travel available eg. by using Young Person's
Railcards and booking well in advance. NB. Taxi expenses cannot be re-imbursed.
Please note: Funds are available only for full-time
study towards a medical degree leading to GMC registration as a doctor. The
trustees regret they are unable to assist those intending to qualify as dentists,
vets, midwives or other health professionals or those undertaking intercalated
degrees.
