Women in Academic
Medicine
Women doctors who work for Universities
face career barriers that have been clearly identified for the past decade.
MWF Campaigns – Women in Academic Medicine
The MWF has worked to bring these issues to government through the Women’s
National Commission and the British Medical Association. For example, it has
worked with Universities to bring examples of good practice to a wide audience;
it has members who achieve part time placement for academic trainees at Deaneries.
However its work in this area needs further development because there are
still medical schools without a clinical female professor, there are few part
time posts and women’s salaries lag behind those of men with comparable
experience.
The MWF sends representatives to the BMA Medical Academic Staff Committee.
MWF is keen to maintain the momentum it has achieved and encourages academic
women to be mentored (see mentoring tab). If you wish to be involved in these
activities please contact the central office at admin.mwf@btinternet.com
