The Medical Women’s Federation is very interested
to read the views of the Chief Medical Officer in the chapter entitled “Opportunity
Blocks” in his 2006 report. It highlights the problems facing women
in medicine, especially the dismal lack of opportunities for accessing less
than full time training or return to work schemes. Most women doctors have
a uterus and may wish to use it. It costs £250, 000 of taxpayer’s
money to train each doctor. Now that 60 – 70% of qualifying doctors
will be female these issues need to be addressed for the future of the medical
workforce. Over the 90 years since our inception in 1917 we have been the
largest organisation representing women doctors in all specialties across
the UK and have been lobbying on these very issues. Women doctors around the
country will be delighted that the CMO is taking them seriously.
